W&Co Search is proud to partner with the City of Monash in the recruitment of the Manager Corporate Governance and Legal.

The City of Monash is one of Melbourne’s most established and diverse municipalities, recognised for its strong community focus, quality services and commitment to transparent, accountable and contemporary local government.

Reporting to the Director Corporate Services, this senior leadership role leads a broad and influential portfolio spanning corporate governance, councillor support, legal services, information and records management, insurance and claims. The role will provide trusted advice to Council, the CEO, Executive Leadership Team and broader organisation while supporting effective decision-making, statutory compliance and strong governance practice across a complex civic environment.

Leading a team of approximately 12, the Manager Corporate Governance and Legal will support statutory meetings, Council briefings, councillor conduct, elections, privacy, freedom of information, complaints and public interest disclosure responsibilities. The role will also oversee the centralised legal function, guide the effective use of external legal services and continue to mature information governance and records management across Council.

The preferred candidate will be an experienced governance leader with strong legislative knowledge, sound political judgement and the confidence to provide clear, practical and well-reasoned advice in a visible local government setting. Victorian local government experience, knowledge of the Local Government Act 2020 and strong understanding of Council meeting processes will be highly regarded.

You will bring credibility with councillors and senior leaders, strong written and verbal communication skills and the maturity to lead through nuance. A qualification in law, governance or a related discipline will be well regarded. Admission as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and a current practising certificate, or the ability to acquire one, will be strongly preferred.

This role will suit an established manager or senior governance leader ready to step into a broader management appointment, with the capability to lead experienced specialists, strengthen governance maturity and contribute to a highly important corporate portfolio.
